Track Compounds
Carbotech pad compounds increase in coefficient of
friction, thermal range,
and initial bite as the part numbers go up. So for example, an XP10 pad has more
grip,
stronger initial bite, bigger effective temperature range than an XP8 pad.
The XP 8 pad has more of everything than the AX6 pad, which has more than the
"stradale" pad, 1521. For maximum controllability under maximum braking,
the car is usually
set up with a slightly lesser pad in back. This helps to keep the rear of the car in
back of the front.
Carbotech offers compouds several ranges higher than XP10, but it is very
hard to conceive of any Alfa short of a Tipo 33 or F1 that would need them.
For instance, XP12 has an effecitive temperature range of 250-2000'F.
For serious track work, the heavier, more powerful Alfas such as 2.0L, V6, & V8,
usually do best with XP10 in front and XP8 in back.
Lighter, less powerful Alfas, such as Giuliettas, work best with XP8 at both ends.
Certain competition cars that need to be effective on the street as well as on the track
(or in special stages on the street), such as Carerra Panamerica; One Lap of America, etc.
have had very good sucess using XP8 in front and back.
In the lower ranges, AX6 & 1521, the
recommended set up is to use the same compound
on both ends of the car.
