"Monkey Shifter Kit"
Complete shift linkage rebuild
kit for cars with the later Iso-Static shifter - GTV6 from mid 1985 & Milano (75).
This kit is comprised of Alfa Romeo Ricambi Originali parts only. It will
restore your car's shifting quality to new. The dedion remote shift transaxle cars
take a lot of criticism for the speed and accuracy of their shifts. However, most of
the people doing the criticizing are driving cars with tired, whipped out shift
linkages. They have never actually driven one of these cars with a fresh from the
factory shifter! While it may never be as slick and direct as a shifter coming right
out of the transmission, it is actually quite good. In fact, one could argue that is
the best job ever done on this type of shifter by any car manufacturer!
Alfa has just declared the dark gray plastic sleeves (E) shown in the picture
NLA . Fortunately, these usually survive well, so there is an excellent chance you
can reuse yours. We are looking for a source for a replacement - if you know of one,
please contact us ASAP!
Alfa has just made the bushing at the bottom of the shift handle (item 8)
NLA. Still working on finding replacements, but.....
Oh!....why "Monkey Shifter Kit"? Don't know why. The fellow that
kits these happens to call it that, and somehow, the name just seems appropriate!

Long considered to be the
ultimate in gear box preparation for the track. Lightening the gears removes
unnecessary rotating mass from the gear train. The principal benefits that accrue
are quicker shifting and longer synchro life. Performatek undercuts (where possible
- this is not feasible on the smaller gears) and cross drills the gears*.
The biggest "bang for the buck" is to have 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gears on the
main shaft lightened, and 4/5/R on the layshaft. These synchros see the most use
(especially 2nd and 3rd), and they are on the biggest gears, so they have to deal with the
biggest disparity in weight & rotation speed. Having said that, once the box is
open, it is not uncommon to have them all done.
Performatek can also offer a complete transmission rebuild. It is difficult to give
a complete price schedule for a transmission rebuild because it is hard to predict which
pieces will be worn beyond acceptable limits. The labor is fairly constant, but the parts
need vary widely from transmission to transmission. The only way to know is to give
the transmission or at the very least, the gear stack, a thorough inspection by a seasoned
professional - either by your local Alfa technician or by Performatek. Typically,
one or more dog rings will need to be replaced (this actually is the part that grinds on
bad shifts). Expect one or more synchros & sliders to be worn, and it is very
likely that the ring and pinion shim will need to be replaced. Of course, the
prudent Alfa owner will also prepare for the surprise "issues" that always seem
to crop up in a rebuild like this.
Some of these parts can still be replaced by OEM parts, for some you may have a choice of
either OEM or aftermarket parts. Some parts are NLA and can only be replaced by
scavenging less worn parts from used transmissions. In order for Performatek to
inspect the gears, it is recommended that you send the complete mainshaft with gears
attached. If you prefer, you can send the complete transmission, case and all.
After inspection, we can quote the parts cost for the rebuild.
GEAR OIL must be drained thoroughly.
*In order to perform the machine work, the gears must
have dog rings removed - either by you or by us.
Delivery
Gear lightening 3-4 weeks after receipt of gears.
Transmission rebuild - tbd, but typically 2-3 weeks after receipt.

The clutch assembly on dedion
drive line Alfas can also yield performance gains via lightening. The stock clutch
disk weighs close to 3 pounds and for any engine output up to about 230hp, should be
adequate. It also is easy to drive on the street. However, if your engine will
be delivering more power than that and/or be primarily a track car, then other clutch
options become preferrable and realistic. We can provide clutch disks with greater
friction levels and clamping forces. Your pressure plate can be modified to
give more clamping force if necessary. Contact us
and we can review your needs and options.
The clutch/transaxle flywheel can be lightened by close to 2 pounds. This will make
a significant contribution to the car's throttle response, gear shifting performance and
reduce the amount of power robbed from the rear wheels.
Aluminum flywheels for the Alfa V6.
Weighing less than 10.5 pounds (4.7KG), Performatek offers these super light weight
flywheels to eliminate the power robbing mass of the original cast iron flywheels.
Instead of using that precious engine output to spin the flywheel, use it to spin the rear
wheels and maximize your Alfa's forward progress!!
There are separate versions for the 2.5L engine and for the 3.0L engine. These are
externally balanced, to compensate for the V6's inherent imbalance, just as Alfa
made the cast iron originals. They mount and balance just as the originals with ring
gears in the correct position.

The limited slip differential
is an important contributor to gaining maximum performance from your Alfa. In
slippery or marginal traction circumstances, it allows some power to be fed to the wheel
that normally would be unloaded and spinning wildly. Balancing the torque applied to
the rear wheels increases the chance that one or both can find traction and keep the car
moving. Of course, this feature becomes increasingly important as engine output
increases. This type of differential relys on friction clutch disks to transfer the
torque from one axle to the other. Over time, these disks wear out, lose their
friction, and the limited slip differential gradually reverts back to an open
differential. The result is big throttle induced wheel spin in the wet, or in
uphill corners, etc. When this happens, it is time for these clutches to be
replaced.
For those who want more, the differential's performance can be increased to give even
better performance. In the standard Alfa Romeo limited slip differential, the limit is set
to about 25%, however, by rearranging the disk stack, the slip limits can be almost
doubled.
Performatek can perform either a standard rebuild or a high performance rebuild. We
will also inspect the differential carrier bearings, and notify you if one or both need to
be replaced.
We have recently received limited slips that were so bad that even the spacer disks had to
be replaced. These rebuilds obviously ended up costing more. Highly unusual,
nevertheless, be prepared for any eventuality when they are opened and inspected.
All GTV6 and most Milano (75) transaxles shipped to the USA were open differentials.
It is possible to install a limited slip into your transaxle, or change to an
alternate transaxle to gain a different final drive ratio. It is not inexpensive,
but it can be done.
Please inquire, and we can discuss your needs and options.
