105/115 Drive Line Price List Flywheel Bolts for 1300/1600/1750 Transmission gear lightening Clutch Assembly Limited Slip |
|
Flywheel bolts for 1300, 1600 & 1750 engines.
These bolts have long been
unavailable from Alfa. That means these bolts have been reused over and over for
engine rebuilds, and undoubtedly, they are well past their limits for safe use. In
fact, upon close examination, most show serious wear marks under their heads. They
should be replaced with new, but people have reused them because they had no alternative.
These new bolts are custom made replacements by ARP (Automotive Racing Products), the
premiere automotive fastener manufacturer. Using their proprietary processes, these
bolts are forged from special aerospace alloys, then heat treated before thread rolling,
and machining. These high tensile strength bolts are rated at 180,000 psi.
They are far superior to OEM and they are available. Washers are chamfered to fit
the bolt's underhead taper.

Long considered to be the
ultimate in gear box preparation for the track. Lightening the gears removes
unnecessary rotating mass from the gear train. The principal benefits that accrue
are quicker shifting and longer synchro life. Performatek undercuts (where possible
- this is not feasible on the smaller gears) and cross drills the gears*.
The biggest "bang for the buck" is to lighten 1st, 2nd & 3rd gears on
the mainshaft, and 4th, 5th & Reverse on the layshaft. These synchros see the
most use (especially 2nd and 3rd), and they are on the biggest gears, so they have to deal
with the biggest disparity in weight & rotation speed. Having said that, once
the box is open, it is not uncommon to have them all done.
Performatek can also offer a complete transmission rebuild. It is difficult to give
a complete price schedule for a transmission rebuild because it is hard to predict which
pieces will be worn beyond acceptable limits. The labor is fairly constant, but the parts
need varies widely. The only way to know is to give the transmission or at the very
least, the gear stack, a thorough inspection by a seasoned professional - either your
local Alfa technician or by Performatek. Typically, one or more dog rings will need
to be replaced (this actually is the part that grinds on bad shifts). Also, expect
one or more synchros & sliders to be worn. Of course, the prudent Alfa owner
will also prepare for the surprise "issues" that always seem to crop up in a
rebuild like this..
Some of these parts can still be replaced by OEM parts, for some, you may have a choice of
either OEM or aftermarket parts. Some parts are NLA and can only be replaced by
scavenging less worn parts from used transmissions. In order for Performatek to
inspect the gears, it is recommended that you send the complete mainshaft with gears
attached. If you prefer, you can send the complete transmission (minus bell
housing), case and all. After inspection, we can quote the parts cost for the
rebuild.
GEAR OIL must be drained thoroughly.
*In order to perform the machine work, the gears must
have dog rings removed - either by you or by us.
Delivery
Gear lightening 2-4 weeks after receipt of gears.
Transmission rebuild - tbd, but typically 2-3 weeks after receipt.

The Alfa 105/115 clutch
assemby can also yield performance gains via lightening. The stock clutch disk
weighs close to 3 pounds and for any engine output up to about 180hp, should be adequate,
and is easy to drive on the street. However, if your engine will be delivering more
power than that and/or be primarily a track car, then other clutch options become
preferrable and realistic. We can provide clutch disks with greater friction levels
and clamping forces. Your pressure plate can be modified to give more clamping force
if necessary. Contact us and we can review your
needs and options.
The flywheel can be lightened significantly which will greatly reduce rotating mass to
give more immediate throttle response and rob less power from the rear wheels. For
the most gain, the flywheel can be replaced with a very lightweight aluminum or steel
flywheel.
For the replacement flywheel, you will need to specify the ring gear (tooth count)
required.

The limited slip differential
is an important contributor to maximizing performance from your Alfa. In slippery or
marginal traction circumstances, it allows some power to be fed to the wheel that is
normally unloaded and spinning wildly. Balancing the torque applied to the rear wheels
increases the chance that one or both can find traction and keep the car moving. Of
course, this feature becomes increasingly important as engine output increases. This
type of differential relys on friction clutch disks to transfer the torque from one axle
to the other. Over time, these disks wear out and the differential effectively
reverts back to an open differential. The result is big throttle incudced wheel spin
in the wet, or in uphill corners, etc. When this happens, the clutches need to be
replaced.
For those who want more, the differential's performance can be increased to give even
better performance. In the standard Alfa Romeo limited slip differential, the limit is set
to about 25%, however, by rearranging the disk stack, the slip limits can be almost
doubled.
Performatek can perform either a standard rebuild or a high performance rebuild. We
will also inspect the differential carrier bearings, and notify you if one or both need to
be replaced.
We have recently received limited slips that were so bad that even the spacer disks had to
be replaced. These rebuilds obviously ended up costing more. Highly unusual,
nevertheless, be prepared for any eventuality when they are opened and inspected.
